The Sixers signed undrafted Texas A&M forward DJ Hogg and undrafted Notre Dame guard Matt Farrell, newly appointed general manager Elton Brand announced on Wednesday. The terms of the deals were not disclosed.
In order to make room for the two signees, the team waived guard-forward Anthony Brown and center Norvel Pelle. The Sixers have until Monday to cut the roster down to 15 players in addition to their two-way contract players, 17 total.
Including the two-way contracts of Shake Milton and Demetrius Jackson, the Sixers current roster has 20 players. Hogg, Farrell, and recently signed Emeka Okafor are likely to be cut, though the could sign as affiliate players with the Delaware Blue Coats of the G League.
Hogg was a part of two Sweet 16 runs with the Aggies. He played with the New Orleans Pelicans' summer league team in Las Vegas, averaging 7.5 points and one assist in 13.5 minutes per game.
Last season, as a junior, the 6-foot-9 combo forward averaged 11.1 points and 5.3 rebounds while shooting nearly 38 percent from three-point range on 5.4 attempts. Hogg went undrafted in part due to character concerns after he was suspended several times for violating Texas A&M team policy.
Here's what the Ringer staff said about Hogg heading into the draft:
"Hogg, like fellow teammate Robert Williams, bounced back from an up-and-down regular season to cap off his college career with an unlikely run to the Sweet 16. At 6-foot-9 and 215 pounds, he has the type of size and athleticism that NBA teams are looking for at the forward positions, and a sweet outside stroke (37.8 percent from 3 on 5.4 attempts per game this season) that should get him a summer league invite, even if off-the-court concerns prevent him from getting drafted."
Farrell played for the Miami Heat in July's summer league and averaged 3.3 points, 3.3 assists, and 1.3 rebounds. The 6-foot guard averaged 16.3 points and 5.5 assists per game his senior season at Notre Dame last year. He shot 37.7 percent from three on 8.4 attempts per game.
Brown, out of Stanford, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 G League draft, but has spent his NBA life primarily as a G-League standout bouncing around the league. He averaged 18.9 ppg with the Iowa Wolves, the Timberwolves' affiliate last season.
Pelle, a native of Antigua and Barbuda, averaged 7.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in five games with the Sixers during the Las Vegas summer league. He also spent two seasons with the team's G League affiliate, then the Delaware 87ers, before spending time in Lebanon, and Italy.
